Is Uganda Hot? Complete Weather Guide for 2026

Is Uganda hot? Many first-time visitors ask this question before they travel. Surprisingly, Uganda is not as hot as you expect.

Although Uganda sits directly on the Equator, it has a mild and pleasant tropical climate. This is because of its high altitude. For instance, most of the country is over 1,100 meters above sea level. Therefore, Uganda is warm during the day and cool at night, which makes it perfect for safaris all year round.

How Hot is Uganda Throughout the Year?

On average, Uganda’s temperature ranges between 25°C and 29°C during the day. However, evenings can be quite cool at 17°C to 18°C.

In fact, Kampala, the capital city, is currently 25°C and sunny. Meanwhile, the hottest month is February when temperatures reach 33°C in some areas. In contrast, July is the coolest month with an average of 24°C.

Uganda’s Two Seasons Explained

Unlike Europe, Uganda does not have summer or winter. Instead, it has dry seasons and wet seasons.

1. Dry Season: Best Time for Safari

The first dry season is from December to February. During this time, it is hotter and sunnier. As a result, this season is ideal for game viewing because animals gather near rivers.

Similarly, the second dry season is from June to August. Because it is less hot and has clear skies, it is the most popular season for tourists to visit Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks.

2. Wet Season: Green Season

The long rainy season runs from March to May. During these months, rainfall is heaviest. However, it usually rains for only 1-2 hours in the afternoon.

Likewise, the short rainy season is from September to November. Although roads can be muddy, this period is excellent for gorilla trekking because the forest is lush and there are fewer crowds.

Which P art of Uganda is the Hottest?

The temperature in Uganda varies by region. For example:

Hottest Parks: Kidepo Valley in the North-East can reach 40°C. In addition, Murchison Falls National Park is also very hot at 32°C to 35°C.

Coolest Parks: On the other hand, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla Park are much cooler at 14°C to 20°C. Therefore, you will need a warm jacket for gorilla trekking.

Snowy Area: Surprisingly, Rwenzori Mountains has snow and glaciers all year round at 5,109m.

When is the Best Time to Visit Uganda?

The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry months of June to August and December to February. Consequently, you will enjoy the best wildlife viewing and easier hiking.

If you want to save money and see green landscapes, consider September to November. This is also a great time for bird watching.

What to Pack for Uganda Weather

To be comfortable, you should pack the following:

First, light clothes for daytime game drives.
Second, a warm sweater for evenings and for Bwindi.
Third, a waterproof rain jacket.
Finally, sunscreen and a hat because the Equator sun is very strong.
