Hidden Gems of Murchison Falls National Park
Most travelers know Murchison Falls National Park for the mighty waterfall where the entire Nile squeezes through a 7-meter gap and drops 43 meters. But Uganda’s oldest and largest park at 3,893 square kilometers has secrets that most tourists miss.

1. Rabongo Forest – The Secret Island Forest
Deep inside the park, about 8km after the Wairingo gate, lies Rabongo Forest. It is a hidden jewel that many safari vehicles drive past. This small patch of tropical forest in the middle of savanna feels like an island.
It is one of the best places for a nature walk. With a ranger, you can walk for two hours and find chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and hundreds of butterflies. The forest floor is soft, the canopy is cool, and the birdlife is incredible. Unlike Budongo, Rabongo is quiet and exclusive.
2. The Nile Delta and Shoebill Swamp
At the northern tip where the Victoria Nile enters Lake Albert lies the Nile Delta. This vast papyrus swamp is one of the most peaceful places in the park and is rarely visited.
This is the home of the prehistoric shoebill stork. Early morning boat rides from Paraa into the delta give you the best chance to see this rare bird standing still like a statue. You will also see huge congregations of hippos, crocodiles and water birds. Most tourists stop at the bottom of the falls, but the real birders go to the delta.
3. Buligi Hills and the Northern Wilderness
The Buligi area, between Paraa and the Albert Delta, is the heart of the park’s game viewing but it also hides secluded valleys. The rolling Buligi hills offer the best sunrise game drives. This is where you find the rare Rothschild’s giraffe that only lives in Murchison and Kidepo in Uganda.
Staying at the Buligi Tsetse campsite area gives you a night under the stars with lions roaring in the distance. It is raw, authentic and far from the lodges crowds.
4. Budongo Forest – The Chimpanzee Capital
Just outside the southern boundary of Murchison lies Budongo Forest, Uganda’s largest mahogany forest. It is home to over 600 chimpanzees.
A chimpanzee tracking experience here is one of the park’s best hidden gems. You walk through tall trees with roots the size of walls, listening to chimps calling above. When you find them, you spend an hour watching them feed, play and groom. It is a perfect add-on to your savanna game drives.
5. The Top of the Falls Hike – Beyond the Photo Point
Everyone goes to the top of the falls to take a photo. But the real hidden experience is hiking from the bottom to the top. You get off the boat at the base and climb the Bakora trail with a ranger. On the way, you see wildflowers, baboons on the rocks, and the Nile exploding beneath your feet. The mist creates rainbows that you won’t see from the car park.
6. Mubaku and Cultural Villages
On the outskirts of the park near Masindi live the Mubaku community. A visit to their village gives you traditional dances, local honey tasting and stories of how they coexist with wildlife. The Masindi markets nearby are also a gem for handmade crafts and the famous Ugandan Rolex.
Best Time to Visit These Hidden Gems
The best time to explore these gems is during the dry seasons from June to October and December to February. Roads are dry, animals gather near the Nile, and forest walks are easier.
